Popular Culture F1FF: Assignment 3-2

1. What is your understanding of the word "ritual?"
A ritual, for me, is any actions that are performed during specific occasions. It can be considered as sacred, or not.
One person can do it, or a group of person sharing the same belief can perform the same ritual. I do believe that a
ritual as a traditional aspect. It belongs to a group of people, a distinct community.
2. What rituals do you observe in our society?
Examples of rituals that I observe in our society are : Birthday party, Wedding ceremony, hugging someone that we love, hand shaking someone we know,
Christmas Eve ceremony etc ... The society in My country, Ivory Coast, is quite different from the one in United States. Therefore, It may be confusing
to answer this question. In my case, I answered it by generalizing the context.
3. What rituals do you observe in your family?
In my family, back in Ivory Coast, I observed many ritual. In my family for example, we use do pray everyday Monday through Friday, at 09:00 PM at home. In addition,
every week end, we all heading to the beach to spent some time together, and have a great time.
All the young population in the capital city, Abidjan, use to go to club, in a certain place all the week end. We also wash our hand before eating, and we used to eat all together as a family.
4. Are there any rituals that you can identify that are prevalent today? If so, what are they?
Since I'm not in my country, I'll talk about rituals that are prevalent here in USA, because it's the place where I'm currently. The first ritual that I have in
mind is Thanksgiving. All the Americans, and all people here in this country love to celebrate it. One that is very popular now, is facebook. I mean the action to
look at his facebook page. I'll consider it at a ritual, because I know some people that have this ritual a lot of time during a single day. Going to the Super bowl for me
be considered as a ritual, or heading to the movie theater 2 times per month can also be considered as a ritual.
5. What ritual would you like to develop for either our society or your family?
If I was currently in my country, I would love to develop the ritual of doing some exercises before or after work / school. This may sounds crazy, but the reality is not so many people are doing sport to stay in shape in my country. Yes this is true. People are too busy working and partying that they forgot to do the basic things. Sport is important for the human condition. Because of this culture of not doing sport,in my case, It has been and it is still difficult for me to exercise here in USA. I mean it is difficult to adopt a new habit if you didn't do it often. But I'm confident that one day, I'll be able to achieve my goal.
